For those who get it right, conservatories are the highlight of a home.

They give you a safe space to unwind with a book, watch television, and even work out or use the space as a home office. The most important thing is that the conservatory is comfortable all year round, and once that is achieved, then there is an almost endless list of potential uses.

Energy efficient conservatory roofs are the best way to guarantee this. Tiled solutions have replaced creaky old polycarbonate conservatory roofs and underperforming glass roof setups, giving homeowners a comfortable living space they can actually enjoy 365 days a year, while also helping to lower energy bills.

At BSF Windows, we’ve fitted hundreds of these tiled roofs across Surrey and Sussex, and the feedback is always positive, with customers consistently referencing the consistent temperature, aesthetic appeal and increase in their home’s value.

Introducing solid conservatory roofs

A solid conservatory roof is exactly what it sounds like, a fully insulated, tiled roof that replaces the old polycarbonate or glass panels on top of your existing conservatory. They were developed because traditional polycarbonate and single-glazed glass simply weren’t up to the job. Older conservatories were notorious for being icy in winter, sweltering in summer and so noisy in the rain you couldn’t hear yourself think.

Solid roof systems were the industry’s answer to that problem.

How they’re built

Our tiled conservatory roof is what’s known as a “warmer roof” system, meaning the insulation sits above the structure to stop heat escaping. Here’s how the layers come together:

  • A timber pod frame (pre-assembled in the factory for a quick fit)
  • A glulam ring beam for structural support
  • OSB structural decking with a breathable membrane
  • Premium multi-foil insulation paired with insulated plasterboard
  • Lightweight tiles on the outside and a smooth plastered ceiling inside

And don’t worry about losing your natural light. We can build in roof windows, fixed glazing panels or even a roof lantern to keep things bright and airy, so you avoid the “dark room” problem some people associate with solid panels.

What are the benefits of an energy efficient conservatory roof?

Let’s talk about thermal performance, because this is where solid roofs really shine. Thermal performance (sometimes called thermal efficiency) is simply how well a material stops heat moving through it. The lower the U-value, the better the insulation, ensuring less heat escapes in winter and less excessive heat creeps in during summer.

Our tiled roofs achieve U-values as low as 0.12-0.14 W/m²K, which comfortably exceeds the latest UK Building Regulations. That’s a real difference compared to a draughty older roof.

Excellent thermal efficiency and lower bills

Better roof insulation means your central heating system doesn’t have to work nearly as hard during the colder months. Less heat loss equals lower energy consumption, which equals smaller utility bills. Simple as that.

Increased home value

A new conservatory roof gives your property a smarter, more permanent finish, and estate agents widely agree that turning a tired conservatory into a true extension of your home can add real value at resale.

Year-round usability

This is the big one. With proper temperature regulation, your conservatory can finally become:

  • A home office
  • A lounge or snug
  • A kitchen-diner
  • A games room or workout space
  • Even an additional bedroom you could let out for extra income

A look that suits your home

We offer lightweight tiles in colours like Charcoal, Slate and Oak, with slate-effect, shingle and pantile profiles to match your existing house roof.

Acoustic insulation

Will I still hear the rain hammering down?

Not really, no. One of the numerous benefits of a tiled conservatory roof is acoustic insulation, the dense layers of insulation materials and tiles dampen external noise dramatically, so heavy rain becomes a gentle hum rather than a deafening drum roll. Finally, a peaceful space.

Fast installation with minimal disruption

Because our pods are pre-assembled, there’s very little structural work needed on site. From delivery of the materials to completion of the job, most installs are wrapped up in a matter of days.

Choice of glazing

Our standard spec is 28mm clear toughened double glazing, with upgrades like Activ Self-Cleaning glass and solar-controlled Activ Blue or Neutral Grey available.
